Upgrading Junction 28 of the M1

J28 of the M1 is one of the most important logistics locations in the East Midlands. It is almost equidistant between Birmingham and Manchester, the UK’s second and third largest cities. The junction is where the A38 links the M1 to Sutton and Mansfield and to Birmingham via Derby. The M1 link puts both Sheffield and Nottingham within easy reach of residents of South Normanton and Pinxton, each sitting on its periphery, and those living and working in Alfreton, Kirkby and Sutton in Ashfield. The junction serves as a major route in to, and out of, the Peak District National Park.

The junction suffers from an excessive amount of traffic and congestion, as it is simply over capacity. It is essential for the economic development of the surrounding districts and wider region to improve this junction. Hundreds of local residents have raised concerns for noise and air pollution, poor regional connectivity, and road safety.

Mark FLetcher MP campaigning for upgrade to J28, M1

Mark Fletcher, MP for Bolsover, is leading the campaign for upgrading this important junction. In January 2023 he hosted a Westminster Hall Debate to put forward the case for funding to Richard Holden MP, Minister for Roads and Transport. The need is clear, whether that’s road safety, economic development, reducing congestion and emissions, or lowering costs from delays to local businesses.

National Highways have outlined a new design for the junction which has an extremely high Cost Benefit Ratio (CBR) and demonstrates significant improvements to journey times, as well as a decrease in the number of injuries from collisions.

The plans have the backing of Bolsover District Council, Derbyshire County Council, the local enterprise partnership, D2N2, and Midlands Connect, and work is ongoing to secure the necessary funding to prevent standstills, improve the flow of traffic, boost regional connectivity, and ultimately, turbocharge the local economy.

Lee Anderson MP for Ashfield, Nigel Mills MP for Amber Valley and Mark Fletcher MP for Bolsover meet with Richard Holden MP, Minister for Roads and Transport following a Westminster Hall debate on the need for major investment into improvements at J28 in January 2023.

It is imperative that the Secretary of State understands the importance of this vital infrastructure project to our region. This is a key infrastructure project for the Bolsover constituency and as local residents and businesses.

Thank you for your support !
