I spent this morning with Severn Trent Water at their Sewage Treatment Works in Scarcliffe. It was fascinating to see the full process for dealing with our sewage, filtering, treating and what happens to the 'sludge' that's removed before the cleaned water re-enters the system. I was reassured to see their systems for ensuring outputs are kept well below permitted levels. You can read data on their Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA) metrics here https://www.gov.uk/.../severn-trent-water-epa-data-report...
I was impressed by the work Severn Trent are doing across the region investing in infrastructure, tree planting, and working with farmers to ensure they can use the organic matter as a natural fertiliser safely, something I recently discussed with local farmers and the NFU.
It is a continued source of frustration the amount of non-soluables entering the sewerage system, the biggest issue continues to be incorrect disposal of wet wipes, but all sorts of things end up being flushed down the drains and fished out at the treatment works - even a suitcase ! This is something we can all help with.
Thank you to Sam Wilson, Environmental Comm Manager, and Paul Moxey, the Area Team Manager for Waste Water Recycling for taking the time to show me around the site and explain the work they do.
