Over 8 million adults in England have numeracy skills lower than those of a 9-year-old, which costs individuals up to £1,600 a year in lost earnings and means they are twice as likely to be unemployed.
That is why the Government has announced a new, UK-wide numeracy programme: ‘Multiply’, investing £560 million to improve the basic maths skills of over half a million adults.
