Mark Fletcher hails the announcement of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine - marking a significant turning point in the fight against COVID-19.
Today it was announced that the first of hopefully many vaccinations against COVID-19 has been approved use in the fight against COVID-19. The vaccine comes from American Company Pfizer/Biontech and will be delivered in two separate doses.
800,000 doses are on their way to the UK and will be ready to be given to those who are most clinically vulnerable next week.
Commenting Mark said:
"This is just an amazing moment after what has been a difficult few months.
To have developed an effective vaccine that will save thousands of lives and start getting us back to life as normal is an amazing achievement.
There is still a long way to go of course, there are some logistical challenges and vaccinating so many people will be difficult. However this is an amazing moment and marks a turning point in our fight against COVID."
The Pfizer vaccine will be deployed to those in care homes first who are at most clinical risk of falling seriously ill from COVID. Frontline healthcare workers will also be amongst the first to start receiving the vaccine.
There are some challenges with the Pfizer vaccine as it mist be stored at -70C so venues storing the vaccine will have to be appropriate.
