I fully support the work that the Jo Cox Foundation are undertaking with the launch of the Civility Commission today. It is a cause very close to me. I knew both Jo Cox and Sir David Amess, both cruelly murdered as they met with constituents. The loss of any colleague is tragic, but particularly so under these circumstances. Many MPs are regularly reporting death threats and threats of serious sexual violence to the police and over 85% of local councillors have experienced abuse and intimidation. We have already seen politicians stepping down due to the abuse and intimidation they receive and it is acting as a barrier to those considering running for election.
My husband works for the Jo Cox Foundation and I am incredibly proud of him. The work that the foundation are doing is extremely important to ensure people receive support in their work and that we, as a country, can continue to attract the very best calibre of MP's and politicians.
The Jo Cox Commission is gathering evidence and ideas from different sectors to attempt to tackle this issue from all angles. They are looking for the views and experiences of elected politicians (current or former), their staffers, political parties, government and police forces and the general public, to help find solutions to help stop abuse and intimidation, produce recommendations and campaign for their adoption.
