Mark has pledged to support the Government’s new ambitious plans to improve standards on animal welfare in this week’s Queen’s Speech.
Following the Queen’s Speech last week, the Government have laid out new ambitious plans to improve standards of animal welfare throughout the UK.
The Government have pledged the highest standards of animal welfare and will plan to pass three different bills over the course of the next year.
This will deliver a range of positive steps to bring up the standards of animal welfare. Some of the new measures include mandatory microchipping for cats, legally recognising that animals can feel pain and suffer, ending the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening and changing import rules to reduce puppy smuggling.
Supporting the new measures, Mark commented:
“I’m absolutely delighted that the Government are setting out ambitious new plans to make the UK a world leader in standards of animal welfare. We’re a nation of pet and animal lovers, and these reforms are totally the right thing to do.
This follows on the brilliant work the Government has already been doing on improving animal rights – including introducing 5 year sentences for those that commit cruelty toward animals.
I’m really pleased that we are now delivering on our manifesto commitment to raise the UK’s animal welfare standards. We have a proud history of high standards here in Britain and It’s great to see that the Government are building on that"
