This last year I have had the great pleasure in joining the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. The scheme allows Members of Parliament to experience an insight into the Armed Forces by shadowing our brave men and women in uniform. I have had the honour of enrolling with the Royal Navy scheme where I have learned an incredible amount from the senior branch of the military.
I have had the opportunity to visit the Royal Marines training base in Lympstone, experience Royal Navy Britannia College in Dartmouth, and see our naval vessels in action at Portsmouth. Watching the Queen Elizabeth II aircraft carrier depart on operational service was an incredible experience which reminded me of the important work our service personnel do to keep us safe at home and abroad.
This last year has taught us the significance of defence and national security. Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine demonstrates how Britain must be able to stand up for itself and its allies. I am incredibly proud of the work this Government has done to provide £2.3 billion of military aid to Ukraine, as well as £220 million in humanitarian aid for her citizens. Our Armed Forces have been outstanding in supporting our allies. In Britain, we have trained thousands of Ukrainian soldiers who will be able to go home and defend their country.
We owe our service personnel so much, and that is why I am pleased to see the great work being done in veterans affairs. With the new office for Veterans Affairs launched in 2019 we have seen huge steps forward. Whether this is the additional resources invested to help with veteran employment or Operation Courage taking veteran healthcare forward, I will continue to do all I can for those who served.
