Domestic abuse continues to be an issue faced by too many in our society and is a cause close to my heart.
Sadly, I receive many enquiries from constituents about the effect that domestic abuse has had on their, or their loved ones, lives – whether that’s dealing with the police and courts, looking after children, homelessness, unemployment, welfare and mental health services, and I have regular contact with the police and local authorities on the matter. Last year there were nearly 30,000 domestic abuse incidents and crimes recorded across Derbyshire, which is nearly 20% of all recorded crimes. This is far too high.
I previously spoke in Parliament about my own experiences of domestic abuse and earlier this year I had the opportunity to meet those involved in commissioning and delivering essential domestic abuse services across Derbyshire. It was really inspiring, and humbling, to meet those who work on the front line with victims, and perpetrators, of domestic abuse on a day-to-day basis.
I am proud to be a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Violence and Abuse, a cross-party group in Westminster, working with organisations and parliamentarians towards the elimination of abuse, to highlight issues experienced by survivors and specialist support services, and to contribute to the development of policy and legislation in this area. I am incredibly proud to support the Government's work in supporting victims of domestic abuse ensuring that they get the support that they desperately need, passing the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 into legislation which will help break the cycle of abuse for so many people, as well as providing over £125 million of additional funding to help support victims.
