Last week I entered Delta, my miniature poodle, into The Kennel Club and Dogs Trustโs Westminster Dog of the Year competition, to raise awareness of responsible dog ownership and animal welfare, and of course to give me an excuse to show off my best friend. My other dog, Max, insisted on coming along too, and it really was a fun time trying to get around the agility course !. The overall, and deserved, winner of the competition was Minister Mims Davies's cockapoo, TJ
I'd like to express my thanks to everyone who voted for Delta in the Sir David Amess 'Pawblic' vote - sadly it wasn't to be and Paco, a nine-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, owned by Rosie Duffield MP, took the trophy.
As a dog owner, issues of animal welfare are incredibly important to me and I have previously worked closely with Dogs Trust on their campaigns to ban puppy smuggling and end the irresponsible use of fireworks. Pets can provide a tremendous source of happiness in our lives and we must ensure all are treated with the love and care they deserve.
