The initial site of Bolsover Castle was built on in the 12th century and was lavishly added to by the Cavendish family, relatives of Bess of Hardwick, in the 1600s. John Cavendish made several additions to the castle before and after the Civil War, and made Bolsover Castle famous for its extravagant and salacious parties and events, some of which had been attended by King Charles I.
In the 20th century, parts of the castle were used by the people of Bolsover, who used the site’s Riding House as a theatre, a cinema and a tennis court. Since 1945, Bolsover Castle has been made open to the public and in the last 40 years has become a Grade One listed building and a site of Historic and Archaeological significance.
English Heritage are now responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Castle and provide year round entrance to the castle and a wonderful variety of exhibitions and events. More information can be found via their website.
